Query Deserves Freshness

Several years ago, Google engineers developed a new part of the Google algorithm to determine when searchers might want the newest or latest information on a topic -- Query Deserves Freshness (QDF). Amit Singhal, a lead engineer at Google, described QDF to The New York Times:

The QDF solution revolves around determining whether a topic is "hot." If news sites or blog posts are actively writing about a topic, the model figures that it is one for which users are more likely to want current information. The model also examines Google's own stream of billions of search queries, which Mr. Singhal believes is an even better monitor of global enthusiasm about a particular subject.

The immediacy of social media combined with Google's faster indexing after the Caffeine update provide greater chances for QDF -- and greater chances for client websites to rank quickly for hot searches. By monitoring social media hot topics, Search Mojo can advise our clients on when to respond quickly to a query deserves freshness (QDF) scenario with appropriate content, helping clients gain quick visibility in search engines on related topics.
